The Moonsighting Committee method adds 5 minutes to Dhuhr and 3 minutes to Maghrib as a precaution, as in its published timetables.
Asr: Hanafi and Shafi‘i
Hanafis pray Asr when an object's shadow equals twice its length plus its shadow at noon; the Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools use once its length. Every city page shows both.
High latitudes
In the UK and northern Canada in summer, the sun may not go far enough below the horizon for Fajr and Isha angles. We then use the "seventh of the night" or "middle of the night" rule recommended for the latitude.
Choosing another method
Each city page opens with the method most used in its country. If your mosque follows a different one, pick it under today's times; the page then shows that method and Asr school, and your browser remembers the choice for that country.
Accuracy checks
Our automated tests compare times for 12 cities across four seasons with an independent implementation (Aladhan); times agree within 2 minutes. The exceptions are UK summer Fajr and Isha, where each implementation applies a different high-latitude rule, and UK winter Asr, where our time matches a direct solar-geometry calculation.
We also compare against published timetables. In November 2026 every prayer agreed within 2 minutes with the Express Tribune timetable for Karachi (Hanafi) and with Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview, near Chicago (ISNA).
United Kingdom
British mosques do not share one timetable, so no single method matches them all. In November–December 2026, against our Moonsighting Committee times:
- East London Mosque (London Salah Times) began Fajr about 4 minutes earlier and Isha about 5 minutes later; Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib agreed within 2 minutes.
- Birmingham Central Mosque began Fajr about 10 minutes later and Isha about 5 minutes later, and uses sunset for Maghrib (3 minutes before ours); Dhuhr and Asr agreed within 1 minute.
Moonsighting Committee sits between these two for Fajr. For Fajr, Isha and congregation times, follow your own mosque's timetable.
