Islamic Midnight vs 12:00 AM: Maghrib-to-Fajr Midpoint Calculator

On a prayer timetable, the midpoint of the night is halfway between Maghrib and the following Fajr, rather than 12:00 AM on the civil clock. Because sunset and dawn shift through the year and across daylight saving changes, that midpoint moves each day.

Calculate Islamic midnight by city and evening date

Choose the evening date on which Maghrib occurs. The calculator divides the elapsed time from Maghrib to the next morning's Fajr in half, properly handling overnight daylight-saving transitions.

Why Islamic midnight is rarely 12:00 AM

Civil midnight (12:00 AM / 00:00) is a fixed clock label set by your time zone and daylight-saving rules. In contrast, the night in a prayer timetable runs from sunset (Maghrib) to dawn (Fajr). Its midpoint is:

Midpoint = Maghrib + ½ × (Following Fajr − Maghrib)

Three factors shift that midpoint away from 12:00 AM: your city's longitude within its time zone (for example, Singapore sits well west of the UTC+8 central meridian, so solar noon is around 1:00 PM and the night midpoint is after 12:30 AM), seasonal changes in sunset and dawn asymmetry, and daylight saving time (which shifts the clock ahead by an hour in summer).

How timetables use the night midpoint for Isha

The Federal Territories Mufti's explanation of dividing the night defines the night from Maghrib to Fajr. On SalahTable's single-prayer Isha pages, we display both the Maghrib-to-Fajr midpoint (often cited as the end of Isha's preferred window in several schools) and the following Fajr start. Scholars and schools of jurisprudence discuss how the midpoint and dawn apply to performing Isha; consult a qualified teacher or your mosque for religious rulings.
