High-Latitude Prayer Times 2027

In 66 of the 407 cities we cover, the sun never sinks 18° below the horizon for part of the summer, so true dawn and the end of twilight, which mark Fajr and Isha, never come. In Anchorage this lasts 127 nights in 2027 (19 Apr – 23 Aug); in London, 59.

Cities north of 45°: nights without astronomical darkness in 2027

"Below 18°" is when the sun never reaches the 18° depression used by the Karachi, Muslim World League and Moonsighting methods; "below 15°" is the same for ISNA's 15°. Solstice times are for 21 June (north) or 21 December (south) with each country's usual method.

How the calculation works

The sun's lowest point is at local midnight, when it sits (90° − latitude − solar declination) below the horizon. In late June the declination is 23.4°, so any city north of 48.6° stays within 18° of the horizon all night, and north of 51.6° within 15°. Dates here come from that formula and are accurate to about a day.

Our city pages use Moonsighting Committee Worldwide for the UK and Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) for Canada, with the high-latitude rule Adhan recommends for each latitude. See the methodology for how UK mosque timetables compare.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no true Fajr in the UK in summer?

Fajr begins at true dawn and Isha when twilight ends, which most methods place when the sun is 15–18° below the horizon. North of about 48.5° the midsummer sun never sinks 18° below the horizon, so the night never gets dark enough: twilight runs from sunset to sunrise.

How are Fajr and Isha calculated when twilight never ends?

Scholars and calculation bodies use an approximation for those nights: the "seventh of the night" rule (Fajr begins in the last seventh of the night, Isha ends the first seventh), the "middle of the night" rule, or the time from the nearest latitude or date when the angle is reached. Our pages use Adhan's recommended rule for the latitude; the Moonsighting Committee method, our UK default, applies its own seasonal adjustment. Many UK mosques publish their own fixed timetables for these weeks.

Where is the shortest night between Isha and Fajr?

On the summer solstice, Newcastle upon Tyne (United Kingdom) has the shortest gap among our cities: 3h 14m from Isha to the next Fajr.

Does this affect Ramadan?

Not in 2027: Ramadan falls in February and March, when nights are long. Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year and reaches the northern summer again in the mid-2040s.
