This is the Umm al-Qura civil-date mapping. The Hijri religious day begins at the preceding local sunset; this tool does not calculate a sunset instant for your location.
Which calendar does this use?
Both directions use the runtime’s Intl.DateTimeFormat Umm al-Qura mapping (islamic-umalqura), also used by our 2027 Islamic calendar. The reverse lookup searches that same mapping rather than using a separate arithmetic calendar. See the ECMAScript internationalization specification for the calendar-formatting API.
Why can another calendar give a different answer?
Umm al-Qura, arithmetic Hijri calendars and local moon-sighting announcements need not assign the same Hijri date to a Gregorian day. Local observance can differ, often by one day. This lookup is a calendar conversion, not confirmation of a future sighting or a public holiday.
For today’s date in each country, with how it starts its months, see Islamic date today. For example, 1 Muharram 1449 maps to 6 June 2027 here, and 10 Muharram to 15 June. Use the announcement adopted by your community for observance; see why Ramadan dates differ.
