Food or cash?

The Prophet ﷺ prescribed one sa‘ of dates, barley, raisins or other staple food per person (Sahih al-Bukhari 1503). The Hanafi school allows its cash value and, for wheat, half a sa‘; the other schools generally require food. That is why Pakistan, India and Bangladesh publish several amounts by commodity, while Saudi scholars direct people to give food.

Zakat al-Fitr is separate from annual zakat on savings; for that, use the zakat calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr is one sa‘ (about 2.5–3 kg) of staple food per person, or its cash value where that is accepted, paid before the Eid prayer. Cash amounts are set country by country: for example PKR 300–PKR 3,800 in Pakistan, SGD 5–SGD 8 in Singapore and AED 25 in the United Arab Emirates in 2026.

When must Zakat al-Fitr be paid in 2027?

Before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. Eid al-Fitr 2027 is expected on Tuesday, 9 March 2027; many authorities encourage paying during Ramadan, at the latest a day or two before Eid, so it reaches families in time.

Who has to pay it?

Every Muslim who has food beyond the needs of the day of Eid pays for themselves and for those they support, including children and, in most schools, a baby born before Eid. The head of the household usually pays for everyone.
