How zakat is calculated
Add up your zakatable assets, subtract debts that are due now, and compare the result with the nisab. If it is at or above the nisab and you have held at least that much for a full lunar (Hijri) year, zakat is 2.5% (one fortieth) of the total. Many people pick a fixed date, often in Ramadan, and calculate on it every year.
The nisab is the value of 85 g of gold or 595 g of silver. Spot prices here come from gold-api.com; exchange rates are Rates By Exchange Rate API. Prices change during the day, and what a jeweller charges is usually higher.
Before you pay
This calculator follows the common method. Pensions, business assets, agricultural produce, livestock and rental property have their own rules that differ between schools. For anything beyond savings, cash and gold, ask a scholar or a zakat organization you trust. Zakat al-Fitr, paid before the Eid prayer, is separate: see Zakat al-Fitr amounts by country.
Frequently asked questions
What is the nisab for zakat today?
Today’s nisab is MYR 4,076 on the silver standard (595 g) or MYR 45,599 on the gold standard (85 g), from spot prices at 17:47 UTC. If your net zakatable wealth has stayed above the nisab for a lunar year, zakat is 2.5% of it.
Should I use the gold or silver nisab?
Many scholars and zakat bodies, especially in South Asia and the UK, use silver because its lower threshold means more people pay and more reaches the poor. Others use gold, arguing that its value has stayed closer to the nisab’s original purchasing power. Both are recognised; follow the scholar or organization you rely on.
What do I include?
Cash, bank balances, gold and silver (jewellery too in the Hanafi school; the Maliki, Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools generally exempt jewellery worn regularly), shares and funds, business stock and money owed to you that you expect to receive. Your home, car, clothes and household items are not included.
Which debts can I subtract?
Debts and bills that are due now, such as unpaid bills, rent or credit-card balances. For long-term loans such as a mortgage, many scholars allow only the instalments due in the coming year.
